Guide To Resources & Links About Pilates Method
Pilates is an acronym for “Proximal Integrating Latent Agile Toning Exercise System. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s, this fitness system is an exercise program that addresses the core postural muscles that maintain body balance and spinal support. All pilates exercises use deep abdominal muscles and back strength and a minimum number of repetitions to develop core stability and prevent back pain.
There are several types of Pilates, including Stott Pilates, Winsor Pilates, Stability Ball-based Pilates, and Yoga with Pilates. Exercises are performed either on a padded floor mat (mat classes) or with special apparatus (machine classes). A Pilates workout is usually about an hour long. The Pilates method offers a wide range of health and fitness benefits. It tones stomach and butt, develops longer, leaner muscles (eg. legs and arms), creates a stronger, more flexible spine, improves body flexibility and helps to relieve joint stress and back pain. It is very beneficial for women.
A good way to learn Pilates exercise is to take a class at your local gym/studio. Alternatively, learn at home using one of the several excellent Pilates for beginners videos available.
