A study from Atlanta, Georgia reports that female physicians are likely to provide good nutritional advice to their patients. This, in turn, seems to reflect better food habits among the physicians. In addition those who had battled with obesity themselves, or who were vegetarian, also gave better advice.
The study involved 3500 female physicians who graduated between 1950 and 1989. Of the physicians studied, GPs, obstetricians, gynaecologists and paediatricians were most likely to provide good advice.
The average intake of fruit and vegetables in those studied was four servings per day, while the alcohol intake of those who consumed it at all averaged one drink per week. However, almost 60% claimed they were trying to lose weight, almost all were trying to get more exercise and 82% were trying to change their diet. Since dietary counselling is still accorded much less attention in medical training than is warranted, this evidence is somewhat encouraging. One wonders about male physicians.
