Xenical Can Assist Weight Loss

The importance of long-term weight management to achieve significant weight loss and improvement to associated health risks such as coronary heart disease has been reinforced by a new study of Xenical, the lipase inhibitor that limits fat absorption in the digestive tract.

Steady Weight Loss and Waist reduction

The results of the study show that the obesity medication Xenical (orlistat) assists patients to maintain steady weight loss and lose up to 10.8cm from their waist if the weight management plan is maintained for a year. Excess fat around the waist is associated with insulin resistance - a known risk factor for type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. (Waist measurements over 102cms for men and 88cms for women can cause serious health complications.)

Xenical Weight Loss Pills Study

The 12 month study of 430 overweight men and women (Body Mass Index of 30-43 kg/m2), was designed to assess the effectiveness of Xenical in patients who are responsive to treatment. Patients who achieved five per cent (approximately 5kg) weight loss after three months and maintained this after a further three months of Xenical treatment, were followed for one year. During this time weight loss and other health improvements, such as reductions in blood pressure, were assessed.

  • The greatest weight loss was seen in the first four weeks of treatment, with an average weight loss of 4.1 kg
  • 70% of patients who entered the study achieved and maintained at least 5% weight loss of 6 months
  • The mean weight loss after one year was 11.6 kg.
  • One in two patients who completed the study lost more than 10 per cent of their initial weight, and over eight in 10 people lost more than five per cent - an amount of weight loss shown to clinically improve the health and well-being of overweight people.

Xenical Weight Loss Pills Study - Comments

Commenting on the results, lead study investigator Professor Hermann Toplak from the Karl-Franzens-Universität, Graz, Austria said:

"These results demonstrate unlike other weight loss medications, Xenical does not work on the central nervous system to suppress appetite. Xenical has a different mode of action and works locally in the gut, reducing fat absorption in conjunction with a reduced fat diet.Xenical is the most extensively studied pharmacological weight management treatment to date, with over 30,000 overweight or obese patients participating in clinical trials. It is an effective therapy that not only helps patients lose weight, but also helps them maintain their weight loss. Since the launch of Xenical in 1998 there have been more than 13.2 million patient treatments world-wide.

UK Obesity Levels

In the UK, 18% of the UK adult population are classified as obese (body mass index (BMI)>30kg/m2) 6 - 20% of women and 17% of men. The prevalence of obesity has been on the increase over the last twenty years and continues to soar. If current trends continue, more than a quarter of British adults will be obese within 8 years.
