| Q.
I've put on a lot of weight over the past couple of years, probably due
to the menopause. Am I stuck with it?
Only if
you want to be. You are no more stuck with weight in your 40s or 50s than
you are at 15.
In fact, a healthy,
well-balanced diet during menopause will not only help you to lose weight,
it will also help to alleviate many common menopausal symptoms.
- As fluid retention
can be a problem at this time drink plenty of water, fruit and vegetable
juices, reduce your intake of caffeine and salt.
- Limit yourself
to 1-2 alcoholic drinks 4-5 times a week.
- Enjoy candy/ chocolate/fast
food only as an occasional treat.
- Include plenty
of fruit, vegetables and salads in your daily diet.
Importance of
Exercise
Exercise is vital for weight control during menopause. Like it or not,
our bodies do slow down as we get older so we need to stay active. Exercise
increases our metabolism and helps to burn off stored fat. Also, it increases
the proportion of muscle to fat in our bodies which is good for our weight
as muscles need more calories than fat.
Difficult Phases
Although many experts maintain menopause does not cause weight gain directly,
my experience is that menopause can make weight/fat loss very slow. However,
even though these slow-weight-loss-phases
