(Boys)

Compare your son's Body Mass Index (BMI) with the numbers on this chart to see what percentile his BMI-for-age falls into. Boy's Weight Status Should Be Determined By Individual ExaminationEven if a boy's weight falls between the 5th and 85th percentiles, this does not necessarily mean that he has a healthy weight. Your child's weight status should be assessed by your doctor on the basis of individual examinations conducted over time. This method is required to allow for growth spurts which may otherwise skew his BMI-for-age. Boys Can Develop Eating DisordersBoys with weight problems need sympathetic treatment, as eating disorders, like anorexia, bulimia and binge eating, are becoming increasingly common among young males. According to US estimates from The National Institute of Mental Health, about 1 million boys and men suffer from eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or other associated dietary conditions. Studies suggest that 5 to 10 percent of people with anorexia or bulimia are males. See also: Exercise
