Eating DisordersDisordered patterns of eating are most common among young people, especially teenage girls. Recognised eating disorders include conditions like: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating with/without purging. Furthermore, the use of laxatives, diuretics and other over the counter pills like fiber supplements, can lead to disordered eating and digestion problems. What causes eating disorders is unclear, although personal trauma, emotional shock in adolescence or teens, a tendency towards compulsive behavior and a strong urge to take control are all relevant factors. Family support, though difficult, is essential in the successful treatment of eating disorders, combined with medical supervision which is always essential. Treatment involves counseling, customised eating plans and emotional support. If untreated, eating disorders (eg. anorexia) can lead to severe ill-health and even death. If you have a friend or a family member whom you suspect is anorexic or bulimic, or whose binge eating is out of control, seek medical help without delay. Anorexia, bulimia and binge eating can be successfully controlled, but it requires professional medical help.
