Shock treatment for obesityAn Italian doctor has developed a new ground-breaking way of treating obesity - through electric shocks. By implanting a tiny device near the nerves in the stomach wall, overweight people have been shown to lose weight more efficiently than through so-called "stomach stapling", another form of weight loss surgery. The match box-sized device, originally developed by Dr Valerio Cigaina of the Umberto I hospital in Mestre, Italy, works by sending out electrical pulses 12 times per minute. The pulses slow down the muscle contractions which forces food along the digestive tract. The result is that the person feels full, longer.
