Almonds can lower CholesterolTwo-and-a-half ounces of almonds per day can lower your blood cholesterol by up to 12 percent, according to diet research just published by the University of Toronto. In a three-month study of 27 patients with an average high-cholesterol level of 260 milligrams per deciliter of blood, researchers found that eating 73 grams of raw, unblanched almonds a day, (2 small fistfuls) led to a significant reduction in cholesterol. Apparently, although the nuts contain approximately 400 calories, there was no weight gain. Researchers believe that eating almonds has a satiating effect, so people cut down on other foods.
